Healthcare occupations have a projected 15 percent growth rate through 2029, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The median annual wage for healthcare practitioners and technical occupations (such as registered nurses, athletic trainers, radiologic technologists and dental hygienists) was $68,190 in May 2019, which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations in the economy (which was $39,810).
Careers in information and information technology grew by 5 percent, while many others declined by approximately 6 percent. Nationally, employment in computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow 11 percent through 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations, according to BLS. The median annual wage for computer and information technology occupations was $88,240 in May 2019.
In South Carolina, manufacturing occupations grew by a little less than 1 percent over the past year and the growth was in the demand for highly skilled technicians, such as those in industrial maintenance and mechatronics.
Overall employment in protective service occupations is projected to grow 2 percent from 2021 to 2031, slower than the average for all occupations; though slow, the increase is expected to result in about 72,600 new jobs over the decade. In addition to new jobs from growth, opportunities arise from the need to replace workers who leave their occupations permanently.
