Phlebotomy
The phlebotomy certificate program prepares graduates for a rewarding career in hospitals, medical and diagnostic laboratories, physician offices, reference laboratories, donor blood centers, and plasma centers. The certificate program is designed to be completed in as little as one semester. Students are instructed in the knowledge and technical aspects of collecting, transporting, handling, and processing blood specimens accurately and safely.
The program consists of three courses that are designed to be completed in sequence. The first two courses, AHS 120 Responding to Emergencies and AHS 104 Medical Vocabulary/Anatomy must be completed prior to taking AHS 144 Phlebotomy practicum. Students in this program are required to complete a 120-hour clinical rotation where they will obtain 100 or more successful unaided venipuncture and skin sticks. The clinical times for this program are determined by individual clinical sites and are typically daytime hours and may start as early as 4 AM or as late as 8:30 AM. During the AHS 144 Phlebotomy Practicum course, students are in class for 10 hours per week for 4 weeks to obtain the 40 required hours of didactic instruction. Students then attend a clinical rotation for the next 3 weeks. (5 days per week, 8 hours per day to obtain the 120 clinical hours) These requirements are necessary to allow the student eligibility to sit for the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) phlebotomy certification. The certification is a separate cost incurred by the student and is not part of the course or required to complete the course. Students may be assigned clinical rotations in accredited hospital laboratories, large physician offices, or reference laboratories based on availability. The cost of transportation to and from the clinical facility is the responsibility of the student. Attempts are made to place the student in a facility as close to home as possible, but is not guaranteed.
Students are required to submit the following for placement into the AHS 144 Phlebotomy Practicum course:
- Physical Assessment
- Proof of two MMR vaccinations AND Rubella titer is required or if no proof of MMR is available you must have titers for each (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella)
- Proof of two Varicella (Chicken Pox) vaccinations OR titer required
- Proof of Diphtheria-Tetanus Booster (Last booster must have been received within the past 10 years.)
- Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended (Documentation of declination is required if student does not have the vaccine.)
- Proof of 2 step PPD within 3 months prior to entry of program is required or QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT) test
- Physician’s evaluation
- Health insurance
- Liability insurance
- Flu vaccine during flu season
- COVID-19 vaccine or documented exemption.
- Please note *York Technical College does not require the COVID-19 vaccination for students as a condition of enrollment or attendance. Students intending to enroll in a health-care related program should be aware that York Technical College maintains clinical placement agreements with health care facilities where students are required to complete clinical rotations as part of the requirements for their academic program. Clinical sites maintain their own policies governing vaccine and booster requirements, including the COVID-19 vaccine, and any exemption processes related to those requirements. Students choosing to pursue a program that requires a clinical component must follow all vaccine policies and requirements of clinical sites. Vaccine requirements and the approval of exemptions are at the sole discretion of each clinical site, and clinical sites may implement and modify vaccine requirements at any time as they deem necessary.
Clinical facilities require drug screens and background checks before allowing students to participate in clinical rotations. Students participating in clinical may be required to have a drug screen at any time during their rotation. Results of background checks and drug screens will be reviewed with designated personnel at the affiliate clinical sites. To be accepted for a clinical placement, all findings must be satisfactory to all participating clinical sites. Students not accepted for clinical rotations will not be able to successfully complete the course or program. Students are required to hold current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification before entering clinical rotations. Clinical slots are limited for this program.
Admission requirements:
Admission into the phlebotomy certificate program requires that the student have a high school diploma or equivalent.
