Massage Therapy Curriculum
What You Will Learn in Massage Therapy
The Massage Therapy program at York Technical breaks down learning into 12 modules outlined below. Each module teaches different yet equally important information for the success of any massage therapist.
This module provides a comprehensive introduction to foundational massage therapy
principles, covering history and evolution, overview of massage therapy industry,
scope of practice, health benefits of massage, equipment, career longevity, and body
mechanics. Students learn to implement essential self-care routines to prevent burnout
and master proper body mechanics, including Archer and Horse stances, to ensure safe,
professional treatments.
Module two explores the intricate structure and function of the human body in Applied Anatomy & Physiology, a course designed to provide a solid foundation in the body’s major systems and their relevance to massage therapy. Focusing on the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and cardiovascular systems, this course examines how these systems interact and respond to therapeutic touch, equipping you with the knowledge to deliver informed and effective treatments.
Using Massage Therapy Principles and Practices, one of the most widely recognized textbooks in the field, students gain an understanding
of the body’s operations and explore how massage therapy can benefit each system.
Through lectures, visual aids, anatomical models, and hands-on learning experiences,
students develop a comprehensive understanding of the body’s complexity and the ways
in which massage therapy can influence its function. By studying key structures and
their roles in health and wellness, this course integrates scientific principles with
practical application, preparing you for advanced therapeutic techniques.
In this module, students learn the science and art of effective massage therapy and unravel the history and evolution of the massage profession.
This comprehensive 140- hour module equips students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to perform a professional full-body massage within a one-hour framework utilizing proper body mechanics. Through engaging lessons and hands-on practice, students will learn the five essential strokes of Swedish massage and develop an understanding of their therapeutic benefits.
Concurrently, students are guided in cultivating a sensitive, mindful touch and a compassionate presence, both of which serve to profoundly support and elevate the therapeutic process. Through structured practices such as breathwork, exercises in heightened awareness and mindfulness, and the application of blindfolded massage techniques, students intentionally refine their somatic awareness and integrate these qualities into their bodywork.
Additionally, this stage of the curriculum places strong emphasis on professional communication and the development of competencies necessary to effectively assess, manage, and fulfill clients’ therapeutic objectives, forming a foundational aspect of their professional advancement.
This module is designed to equip students with the knowledge necessary to safely and effectively meet clients' diverse needs and examine the crucial relationship between health, disease, and massage therapy.
Pathology covers the study of disease, focusing on common pathologies affecting the integumentary, musculoskeletal, nervous, and circulatory systems, with a particular emphasis on the inflammatory response, client assessment, and therapeutic evaluation.
Through lectures, case studies and presentations, students will learn to identify various diseases, understand their causes and progression, and assess when massage therapy is appropriate, inadvisable, or requires modification. By analyzing pathology information alongside its physiological effects, students will develop the skills to create customized, safe treatment plans for a range of client conditions.
The course also prepares students to recognize when to refer clients to other healthcare professionals for conditions that fall outside the scope of massage therapy.
By integrating the science of pathology with the practice of massage, this course empowers students to provide informed, compassionate care while upholding the highest professional standards.
Module five acts as a critical course designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of professional ethics, appropriate boundaries, and the essential communication skills required in massage therapy practice. The module explores the ethical principles and professional conduct expected of massage therapists, emphasizing the importance of maintaining boundaries to ensure a safe and respectful therapeutic environment.
Through lectures, case studies, and interactive discussions, students will examine topics such as confidentiality, informed consent, managing client expectations, and understanding the therapeutic relationship. The course also focuses on the development of effective communication strategies, including how to clearly convey treatment plans, address client concerns, and navigate sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism.
By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the tools to establish and maintain professional boundaries, foster trust with clients, and handle ethical dilemmas in a manner that upholds the integrity of the massage therapy profession.
This module provides is an overview of assessment and treatment planning for the massage therapist. It covers client intake process and health history assessment, client’s needs and goals for session, developing individualized plans, communication skills for effect and safe interaction.
This modules dives into laws and development along with an overview of the evolution of massage and the importance of the growth of the profession.
The module also covers marketing and promotion strategy, client retention and building referral network, legal and ethical considerations for therapists, and the basics of starting and managing a business.
This module deepens the massage practice, teaching students the following techniques:
- Neuromuscular and Clinical Massage
- Trigger Point Therapy
- Cupping
- PNF / Muscle Energy Techniques
- Chair Massage
- Hot Stone Massage
Module nine advances the massage therapy practice through Applied Neuromuscular Therapy Techniques (NMT), a comprehensive course designed to provide advanced clinical skills for addressing chronic pain, soft tissue dysfunction, and musculoskeletal imbalances.
Neuromuscular Therapy is a sophisticated and integrative system of soft tissue manipulation specifically designed to address chronic muscular pain. This module integrates detailed postural assessments, trigger point therapy, and corrective movement methodologies to deliver holistic and effective care for clients experiencing pain or functional limitations.
Composed of hands-on training and in-depth lecture content, the module equips students with the ability to evaluate client needs, apply targeted NMT interventions, and prescribe appropriate exercises and self-care strategies to promote long-term healing and well-being.
NMT is highly effective in treating chronic pain associated with a range of conditions, including sports-related strains, motor vehicle injuries such as whiplash, repetitive strain injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome, cumulative trauma disorders such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, and structural issues including disc herniation.
Training in this modality equips massage therapists with specialized expertise in the management of chronic muscular pain and empowers them to play a proactive role in the rehabilitation and postural restoration of their clients.
This comprehensive module integrates the structural study of the musculoskeletal system with the applied science of human movement. Students explore the anatomy of bones, muscles, joints, and connective tissues while developing a deep understanding of how these components interact to create motion, maintain posture, and support physical function.
Blending engaging lectures with hands-on practice, the course emphasizes muscle origins, insertions, and actions, as well as joint mechanics and movement patterns. Students will develop skills in palpation, visual analysis, and functional assessment to identify key anatomical landmarks and evaluate movement with clinical precision.
Topics include the roles of agonists and antagonists, neuromuscular pathways, proprioception, and common postural imbalances. Students will also explore how muscles adapt to overuse or dysfunction and how to apply this knowledge in therapeutic settings. Emphasis is placed on assessing and addressing trigger points, referred pain patterns, and muscular imbalances to enhance mobility, relieve discomfort, and improve client outcomes.
Module 11 requires students to earn 100 hours of clinical experience in a work setting with a minimum of 75 hours of hands on massage.
The MBLEx review module is designed to help massage therapy students pass their licensing exam. It reviews months of curriculum into high-yield summaries of anatomy, kinesiology, pathology, and ethics.
Because the MBLEx is a Computer Adaptive Test, the course heavily focuses on test-taking strategies, breaking down question mechanics, and managing time. Students receive targeted mock exams and exercises to maximize their study efficiency right before test day.
