Art Unplugged: New
Composition & Color Course at York Tech Shows Promise April 1, 2010 ROCK HILL—York
Technical College's Composition & Color course—part
of the Digital Design certificate program—has
been reinvented this spring as a "computer-free" art studio class with great
results. The course, ARV 123, was taught previously in the computer graphics lab
before being moved to a new art studio in a converted biology lab. The syllabus remains the same, encompassing the art elements of form, line, shape, value, texture, color and space, only it does so now without any reliance on technology and under the guidance of art instructor Gary Luciano, who has been teaching Color & Composition at York Tech since 2008. “The students are
artists who are now transfixed into learning about form, design and color
using their colored pencils, water colors and pastels," said Luciano. "I'm only trying to
explain that the idea of art begins first and
foremost in the mind and then may be put to
paper in a sketch form before they jump to any computer graphics program like Adobe
InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Flash, etc. While these programs are not
only important, but mandatory, in today’s job market, my passion and
dedication to teaching Composition & Color without computers is rooted in
the need to show them how to think first,
how to plan the project, how to sketch thumbnails with pencil and
then execute it without
having to resort to a Google search, for instance The course is not a drawing course, Luciano said, students aren’t graded on how well they draw but on how well they understand the art fundamentals. Luciano is a graduate of Vesper George School
of Art in Boston. Al Capp, creator of “Lil Abner,” America’s most read
newspaper comic strip from the 1930s to the 1970s, was his illustration
teacher and mentor. He has been a
graphic artist for 30 years, 20 of those with The Boston Globe and the last
10 with companies like Home Depot and Bank of America. In addition to his
teaching responsibilities, he now works as a marketing graphic designer for a local business. York Technical College . 452 S. Anderson Road . Rock Hill, SC 29730 |
