Statement Regarding A Discharged Firearm

March 5, 2009

On the morning of Wednesday, March 4, 2009, a firearm was accidently discharged by a York Technical College student at the Construction Trade Center located on Wilson Street in Rock Hill.  No one was injured as a result of the discharged firearm.  The incident was immediately reported to Campus Security and the student has been taken into custody by the Rock Hill Police Department.

York Technical College’s Student Code prohibits the possession or use on campus of any firearm or other dangerous weapon.   In accordance with the Code, the student has been administratively suspended pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing.

Following the incident, the College’s Crisis Management Team was convened to assess the situation.  The College’s emergency notification system was used to inform students, faculty and staff of the incident and we determined that it would be appropriate to cancel all day and evening classes at the Wilson Street facility.  Also, counseling services have been made available to the college community.

We are very concerned  for all those impacted by this unfortunate incident and we have and will continue to conduct all due diligence to ensure the safety of the campus community.
