The Career Center

Many prospective and current students need some form of career guidance as they plan for a successful future.  The Career Center at York Technical College is located within the Admissions Department.  Here, our Admissions Counselors have the experience and training necessary to assist you as you navigate through the career decision-making process.  We utilize several different types of career counseling tools, including computerized guidance systems and paper-and-pencil assessments.  Your Admissions Counselor will talk with you in detail about your interests and goals, and then will determine which career counseling instrument will be best suited for your particular needs.

Our computerized career assessment tools consists of SCOIS.NET and the Kuder Career Planning SystemSCOIS stands for South Carolina Occupational Information System, and it includes a brief self-assessment that helps you consider your interests and how they relate to various careers.  It also contains detailed information and videos to help you learn more about hundreds of occupations.

The Kuder Career Planning System is an in-depth career guidance tool that contains three assessments.  The first is an interest inventory that matches your interests with career clusters.  The second is a self-reported skills assessment, in which you evaluate and self-report your own strengths and weaknesses.  The third is a work values assessment, in which you consider what is important to you in your "ideal" job - is it money, or flexibility, or prestige, or creativity?  Kuder helps you tie all of this information about yourself together to help you make a well-informed career decision.  It also contains detailed occupational information to help you research those careers of most interest to you.

In addition to our computerized guidance assessment,  we also offer the MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator) personality inventory and the COPS interest inventory.  These are paper-and-pencil assessments that many students find helpful as well.
